ANÁLISE: O que esperar dos Denver Nuggets em 2018-19?

Os Denver Nuggets tiveram de vencer os seus últimos 7 jogos da fase regular para conseguirem uma vaga nos Playoffs na temporada passada, tendo perdido o último jogo da temporada em Minnesota, o que lhes custou o acesso aos Playoffs!

A última temporada foi projetada para encontrar e desenvolver potenciais estrelas para o futuro e, nesse aspecto, os Nuggets fora bem sucedidos.

Registo 17-18: 46-36 (não se qualificaram para os Playoffs)

Quem entra na equipa para esta temporada: Michael Porter Jr. (draft), Isaiah Thomas (agente livre).

Quem saíu esta temporada: Wilson Chandler, Kenneth Faried, Darrell Arthur, Devin Harris.

Nikola Jokic foi literalmente o centro do universo em Denver! Liderando a franquia na pontuação, recuperando bolas e auxiliando os seu colegas. Jamal Murray também se tornou uma meaça, melhorando as estatísticas em termos gerais, sobretudo a capacidade de tiro. Gary Harris fez média de 39.6% da linha de 3 pontos e terminou como melhor marcador da equipa. Este trio, todos com 23 anos ou menos, fez a temporada valer a pena e deu aos Nuggets um pouco dem forçar quando começou a pré-temporada.

À medida que o negócio da aquisição de talentos se torna mais difícil, encontrar jogadores de impacto geralmente significa escolher alto no Draft, fazer uma troca que funcione ou ter sorte na agência livre. Outro método é encontrar jogadores que são repentinamente desvalorizados, colocá-lo no mercado a preço baixo e esperar que as suas imperfeições desapareçam. Na melhor das hipóteses, esses dois jogadores ajudam a elear os Nuggets para o topo da Conferência Este e para uma vitória na primeira ronda nos Playoffs. E o pior cenário? Não existe nunhum, já que nenhum dos jogadores teve grande custo. O risco-recompensa em ambas as situações é a favor de Denver.

Dois anos atrás, Porter Jr. estava entre os melhores jogadores do ensino médio nos Estados Unidos e Thomas tinha terminado em quinto na votação de Kia MVP. Quais eram as probabilidades de os Nuggets conseguirem os dois pelos preço que conseguiram? As lesões de Porter Jr. e Thomas de volta, não dão garantias, mas os Nuggets estão crentes de que poderão ser uma boa ajuda.

Porter Jr. foi o potencial nº1 na escolha geral vários mesesd antes do Draft, mas as desgraças custaram-lhe essencialmente a sua carreira universitária. Ainda assim, Porter foi um forte candidato no top 10 até as semanas anteriores ao Draft.

No entanto, os Nuggest sabem que um Porter Jr. saudável pode-se traduzir numa excelente escolha no Draft, e mesmo que demore, ele tem apenas 19 anos!

Semanas após o Draft, os Nuggets adquiriram um jogador que está a passar por uma nuvem negra na carreira, Isaiah Thomas.

Thomas, é vítima de uma tragédia no basquetebol, alguém que criou o seu caminho até ao estrelato e no dia grande, sofreu uma lesão no quadril e viu a sua carreira e fortuna seguir um caminho diferente. Não podemos esquecer que Isaiah Thomas foi um dos jogadores favoritos dos Boston Celtics, um home que aproveitou uma temporada excecional em 2016-17, mas teve a infeliciade de se lesionar no momento errado (não é que haja bons momentos para ter uma lesão, mas no caso de Thomas, veio mesmo no momento mais delicado.). Este potencial contrato de $25 milhões anuais desapareceu, e após passar pelos Lakers e Cavaliers, Thomas sentou-se no mercado de agentes livres e sem dúvida que foi um momento amargo e confuso. Ele não merece.

Os Nuggets deixaram bem claro a Isaiah que Murray é o ponto de partida, e que não vão atrapanhar o seu crescimento. Isaiah disse que não é problema para ele.

O resto do verão serviu para fazer uma limpeza salarial. Extensões abusivas monetáriamente foram oferecidas a Jokic (5 anos a troco de $146 milhões) e a Will Barton ( 4 anos a troco de $54 milhões). Manter Jokic foi uma prioridade, já que ele está a entrar no seu auge e pode em breve tornar-se o melhor poste da NBA.

Estas contratações levaram os Nuggets a fazer parte do lote de franquias com impostos de luxo. Para aliviar esse fardo, eles basicamente doaram três jogadores de rotação da temporada passada – Faried, Chandler e Arthur, sacrificando uma escolhas no draft de 2019.

Os Nuggets entram esta temporada com Jokic, Murray, Barton, Harris, Millsap, Plumlee e Lyles na rotação. Se Thomas e Porter Jr. contribuírem, estas sólidas aquisições podem impedir que o suspende dos Playoffs se estenda até á véspera.
